Thunder Dome

Some would say that Thunder Dome is the primary draw for some of the crowds of environmentalists, Elvin-Folk and the like that come to Lothlorien. It's where drummers and dancers come to play and worship, where bonfires burn throughout the night, where candles are lit and fire spinners practice their art, a place where we are reminded of our ancestral roots. All of this under the cloak of night.

Thunder Dome can be many things for many people. It's just something that you have to experience for yourself.

Check out this archived article on WitchVox on the history of the Thunder Dome!

There is also a DVD that's been put together with videos, slideshows and a time-lapsed show of the dome being raised along with a few interviews. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing one of these DVDs. They are $15 with free shipping!

Over the past 20 years, the Thunder Dome site has grown from it's original 40-foot diameter circular hole in the ground to a 60-foot 4 story steel structure. It is currently in need of covering, or at least having a partial cover to keep it's participants somewhat sheltered from the weather.

We have the materials for a partial covering. What we need now is a staff of volunteer laborers who can come out to help put up the covering. The first layer of covering was just put up on 3/21/09!

For a more permenant structure covering there has been quite a bit of talk about a covering of fero-cement concrete - the same stuff that's used on the hulls of barges, very flexable and lightweight but hard enough to withstand harsh environments. It's not cheap, it would take approximately $11,000 worth of materials alone to cover the dome with this material. There's several proposals out there. More to come on this topic soon. Also, cleaning the dome is like laundry, it's never-ending! Cigarette butts and litter are a constant nuisance here so please remember to put your butt in a butt can or ask a Fire Tender if it's alright to just toss it into the fire. If nothing else, stuff it in your pocket - don't just toss it on the ground! If you ever feel inclined to do so, come down and comb over the dome and give it a good cleaning, careful not to remove any non-trash items from the shrine tubs unless the item is yours.

If there are large chunks of wood that need splitting we try to keep a maul or axe by the pile, feel free to split away and toss it with the rest of the wood, no need to stack it unless you're feeling extra attentive to detail.
